The British Council in Egypt is thrilled to announce its participation in the forthcoming International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) conference, set to take place from 16-19 April.

This year, the conference promises an enriching platform for English language teaching professionals worldwide, featuring the latest in research, innovation, and practice in the ELT field.

Representatives from the Educational sector in Egypt will attend the conference, including Iman Youssef, English Counsellor at Ministry of Education, Dr. Ismail El-Sherbiny, Head of technical affairs at Al-Azhar and Maha Hosni, NileTESOL president. Their presence underscores the national significance of this global engagement

Harry Haynes, English Programmes Lead for MENA, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “The IATEFL conference is a vital forum for the exchange of innovative ideas and practices in English language teaching.

Our participation symbolises our dedication to enhancing language education and intercultural dialogue not just in Egypt, but across the MENA region. This is an exciting opportunity for our educators to share their unique perspectives and learn from their international peers.”

Hala Ahmed, Head of English programmes in Egypt, will lead a special session titled “English for Interfaith Dialogue: Nurturing Understanding and Bridging Divides.” This session underscores the British Council’s commitment to fostering global understanding and cooperation through language education.

The conference will also spotlight the valuable contributions of Egyptian educators to the ELT community. Delegates from Egypt, including Mai Moanis and Eissa Hamdy, Teachers – Ministry of Education, Hesham Eleryan, Teacher – Al-Azhar Al Sharif, and Alaa Talaat, Teacher – Al-Azhar Al Sharif, will present sessions on innovative teaching methodologies tailored to the Egyptian context. Their topics, ranging from energising productive skills to gamification in low-resource classrooms, and the transformative power of feedback, reflect the dynamic nature of ELT in Egypt

Hala Ahmed, Head of English programmes in Egypt, commented “For many of these educators, attending the IATEFL conference marks a significant milestone in their career. Joining from rural and remote areas in the Nile Delta, Upper Egypt, and North Sinai where such important professional development opportunities aren’t easy to access, this experience represents a major turning point in their careers.”

The IATEFL conference is renowned as one of the largest and most significant events in the ELT calendar, attracting over 3,000 professionals from more than 100 countries. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to engage with the latest trends, research, and best practices in the field.

Alongside the rich academic program, the conference features a large resources exhibition with over 50 ELT-related exhibitors, making it a crucial meeting point for educators, theorists, materials writers, and publishers.

The British Council participation in IATEFL, along with the inclusion of delegates from Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, is a testament to its dedication to advancing English language teaching and learning and supporting the professional development of educators in Egypt and beyond.
