Egyptian Minister of International Co-operation and Governor of Egypt at the World Bank Group Rania al-Mashaat was in Washington, DC on Monday where for the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank for the year 2024.

The meetings, which opened on Monday and will conclude on 20 April, will tackle global challenges, increase financing solutions, encourage private sector investment, and enhance the ability to address future shocks.

Government officials from various countries, governors of countries at the World Bank Group, in addition to private sector companies, civil society organisations, and academics will be attending.

The spring meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund come at a crucial time as the world faces complex challenges — climate change and food security, the minister said.

This is especially so for developing countries and emerging economies, which need to develop a clear global vision to overcome poverty and enhance the role of international financial institutions in supporting the efforts of developing countries to develop and withstand shocks, the minister added.

Al-Mashaat will also attend discussions on the road map for development and reform of the World Bank at operational and financial levels to enhance its role in dealing with the current global situation and the development challenges facing member states.

The minister will also be present at discussions on debt swaps for climate action, organised by the International Monetary Fund and ESCWA, the Peterson Institute for International Economics Round Table on Rethinking Economic Policies, an Atlantic Council session on the opportunities and challenges facing the Egyptian economy, and a World Economic Council session on engaging The private sector in climate action, and the meeting of the Global Leadership Council for the United Nations Generation Without Borders initiative.

Al-Mashaat will also be holding bilateral meetings with multilateral and bilateral development partners in light of the efforts undertaken by the ministry to consolidate relations with the international community in a way that supports Egypt’s development vision.
