CAIRO – The Arab League (AL) asserted the Arab region is a terminal to international commercial convoys in different history phases, thanks to its special and unique geographical location.

However, recent developments in the Arab region changed the scene of transport management worldwide, the General Secretariat of the pan-Arab organisation added in a speech, delivered by the director of the Economic Integration Department of the league Bahjat Abul Nasr at a workshop about “Establishing an Arab mechanism and database to support the field of building and repairing ships in Arab countries” on Monday.

Abul Nasr added the convocation of the workshop in the AL ‘s headquarters reflects the greater interest it is paying to maritime transport and ships building industry in Arab countries.

The workshop is held amid extraordinary conditions in the world that are taking their toll on the Arab region, he said, added the global economy is seeing a number of consecutive challenges, topped by Covid virus, the Russian-Ukrainian war and the energy and food crises along with the genocide committed by the Israeli occupation against Gazans.

The AL official said several Arab summits underscored the necessity of boosting the economic integration of Arab countries, adding that ships industry development is the best way to achieve the goal in the Arab region.

The maritime transport is the backbone of promoting economies of countries as it is contributing with about 80% to the global trade volume, according to him.
