Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed the necessity of launching a serious peace process with a specific timeframe aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state on the basis of the two-state solution, with a view to achieving coexistence and stability in the region.

During a phone call the Egyptian foreign minister received Thursday from UK Lbaor MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy, the two sides discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

The phone contact is part of the UK’s shadow foreign minister’s keenness on getting acquainted with Shoukry’s views regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, along with Egypt’s drives at the political and diplomatic levels to implement the truce and achieve ceasefire, in addition to guaranteeing unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance into the Gaza Strip, the spokesman said.

Talks also dwelt upon increasing tension in the region against the backdrop of the continued war in the Gaza Strip and its implicated risks on regional and future stability, he added.

For his part, Shoukry voiced Egypt’s deep concern over military operations taking place at the southern entrance to the Red Sea and their impact on international shipping traffic, warning of the dire consequences resulting from expanding the conflict in the region, according to the spokesman.

The two sides also stressed the importance of finding appropriate political means to work out a sustainable solution for the current crisis, he added.
