Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron on Thursday and agreed on the need to reach a sustainable ceasefire, and to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches the Gaza Strip in sufficient quantities to meet the humanitarian needs of the people of Gaza.

The meeting was also attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri, British Minister for Middle East and North Africa Tariq Ahmed, and British Ambassador to Cairo Gareth Bayley.

During the meeting, the two leaders also stressed their rejection of the displacement of Palestinians from their land, and the importance of working to prevent the conflict from spreading to other parts of the region.

El Sisi also stressed the need for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in implementing the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly on the situation in the Gaza Strip. He also called for serious and determined work towards a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue through the implementation of the two-state solution.

In a statement, Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson Ahmed Fahmy said that Cameron delivered a letter from British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to el-Sisi, congratulating him on his re-election as president of Egypt. Sunak also reiterated the UK’s commitment to continuing to strengthen cooperation and coordination with Egypt in all fields.

The meeting discussed ways to develop bilateral relations between the two countries. The two sides reviewed ongoing cooperation in all areas, particularly on the economic level, and increasing joint investments and trade, to serve the interests of the two peoples.

Fahmy said that the meeting also discussed regional developments. Cameron thanked el-Sisi and Egypt for their role in maintaining security and stability in the region, as well as for Egypt’s intensive efforts on both the political and humanitarian tracks in the context of the current situation in the Gaza Strip.
