Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry denounced on Thursday the Israeli targeting of civilians and civil installations, including the UNRWA, in a clear-cut violation of the international law and the international humanitarian law.
Shoukry made the remarks during his meeting with UNRWA Commissioner Philippe Lazzarini over the humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said the commissioner was keen to be updated on the outcome of ongoing Egyptian contacts and moves to contain the current crisis in Gaza as well as mechanisms to put into effect the agreed-upon pause in Gaza.
The UNRWA commissioner expressed appreciation for Egypt’s role in reaching the humanitarian pause and prisoner swap deal in a way that would allow the entry of more humanitarian assistance to the coastal enclave.
Shoukry underlined the need to build on the humanitarian pause to reach a full and unconditioned ceasefire as soon as possible as being the only way to contain the disastrous humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip.
He expressed thanks to the UNRWA’s role in the current crisis, stressing that the Egyptian side would continue all possible support to facilitate the humanitarian work of the UN agency.
Talks also tackled the draft resolution to be submitted by the Arab and Islamic group to the Security Council to address the irregular aid entry system into Gaza.
