Egypt’s Emigration Minister Soha Gendy said Monday that preparations are ongoing to set up a meeting via video conference with Egyptian communities abroad.

The virtual meeting will focus on expats’ participation in the upcoming presidential election, scheduled for December, said Gendy in a meeting with Egypt’s new consul general in Jeddah Ahmed Abdel Meguid.

Gendy assured that all obstacles will be eased during the voting process.

She and Abdel Meguid discussed means of boosting cooperation to serve the Egyptian community in Saudi Arabia, which is the largest abroad.

Coordination is important to prepare for the presidential election outside Egypt, the minister said in a statement.

Votes of expats are needed if they want to contribute to the future of Egypt and the election of its leadership, Gendy noted.

An operations room will be formed during the election to be able to communicate with all the Egyptian communities abroad to overcome any obstacle during the voting process, she said, adding that this would be done in cooperation with the National Election Committee.

Abdel Meguid, for his part, said that communication and coordination would continue with the Emigration Ministry to serve nationals in Saudi Arabia.

The Egyptian Consulate in Jeddah is one of the biggest in the whole Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the diplomat said, pointing to continued contacts with Saudi officials to overcome any problems facing Egyptian expats.
