Greek PM: Egypt can play vital role in maintaining Europe’s energy security

ATHENS- Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday that Egypt, Greece and Cyprus can be important markets of energy, considering energy a strategic priority and a bridge between Egypt and Europe.

Egypt can play a vital role in maintaining Europe’s energy security, especially during the current unstable situation in the oil market, Mitsotakis said at a press conference with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.

The three countries signed agreements in the fields of trade and navigation, he said, adding that the tripartite summit also resulted in two memoranda of understanding on electricity interconnection and expats’ affairs.

Egypt actively participates in the transmission and distribution of natural gas and other energy sources, he pointed out.

The Greek premier expressed his country’s endeavors to diversify the sources of energy, which makes Egypt an ideal choice as the main supplier of electricity from solar power.

Greece has provided Egypt with 250,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines, Mitsotakis said, adding that co-operation is underway between the two countries in the field of climate change in the long term, and the production of energy from renewable energy sources in the medium term.

He explained that Turkey’s greed towards its neighbours in the Eastern Mediterranean region constitutes a threat to peace in the entire region, stressing the need for restarting the dialogue based on the UN and UNSC resolutions.

The Greek premier stressed that Egypt, Greece and Cyprus are committed to respecting international legitimacy, shedding light on agreements signed by Cyprus and Greece to delineate maritime borders with Egypt.

Mitsotakis pointed out that the talks also tackled the situation in Libya, with the three leaders stressing the need for kicking foreign mercenaries out of the country and holding elections on time to restore stability in Libya.

The three countries also reiterated the importance of democratic transition in Libya and the launch of initiatives for economic co-operation, he said.

The Greek premier also stressed that Egypt, Cyprus and Greece will have significant contributions to the ministerial meeting in Tripoli and the conference scheduled to be held in Paris on Libya.
