Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aati said that around 2,540 kilometres of canals have so far been rehabilitated, as part of the national project for rehabilitating and lining of canals nationwide.
The project targets rehabilitating 20,000 kilometres of canals across the country, the irrigation minister added in a statement released on Thursday.
Abdel Aati went on to say that his ministry is currently implementing several mega projects, with a view to rationalising water use and achieving agriculture development, the statement noted.
He explained that some 21 kilometres of water pumps have been rehabilitated, pointing out that 15 contracts were tendered to rehabilitate water pumps in the governorates of Qalyubia, Daqahlia, Menoufia, Alexandria, Fayoum and Assiut.
The irrigation minister revealed that 489,000 feddans of lands are now using modern irrigation methods, as part of a plan for applying drip irrigation to about one million feddans.
