The Egyptian countryside will be completely transformed. A comprehensive modernisation of facilities is needed to keep pace with the development programme we seek to achieve.

These statements by Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Sharaawi came during a virtual meeting on Wednesday with Governor of Qalioubia Abdel Hamid el-Haggan and other high-ranking governorate officials to follow up measures to allocate land required for the Egyptian rural development project.

Sharaawi stressed the importance of the governorates’ role and coordinating efforts with the Military Survey Department and the Egyptian Survey Authority in providing land to implement the presidential rural development initiative.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi attaches huge importance to the Egyptian Rural Development Programme, better known as ‘Decent Life’.

The president has issued directives to the government to speed up work on the national project to develop 4,200 Egyptian villages, Sharaawi said.

The project comes under the umbrella of Egypt’s Vision 2030 as it aims to develop all aspects of life in the countryside.

The minister spoke of government resolve to complete the project in the shortest time possible with the help of state institutions, the private sector, civil society and development partners.

The minister called on the governors to establish artisanal and industrial zones in villages covered by the programme and to conclude legal procedures and licensing for land allocation.

The project focuses on improving health, education, public services and housing in rural areas in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The governors of Alexandria, Dakahlia, Gharbia, Giza, Luxor, Qena, and Sharqia, among others, participated in the virtual meeting.
