More comfort on the underground 1 - Egyptian Gazette

More commuters can soon look forward to travelling in air-conditioned comfort on the Cairo underground metro.

The Egyptian Transport Ministry is to purchase 55 air-conditioned trains to add to the 20 trains with A/C that are currently operating on line 1 (Helwan-New el-Marg) and the four air-conditioned units running on line 2 (Shubra el-Kheima- Monieb).

The ministry has plans to introduce the private sector in transport management and operation, which will increase competitiveness between different companies and generally improve services.

These remarks came during a meeting Wednesday between Transport Minister Kamel el-Wazir and Spanish Ambassador in Cairo Ramón Casares to discuss co-operation in relation to rail transport.

The minister said he looked forward to further co-operation with Spanish companies in transport, which offers promising investment.

The minister referred to projects currently under way with Spanish co-operation.

A major Spanish firm is engaged on the development of signalling systems on the Cairo-Alexandria line and the Assiout-Nag Hammadi.

The two officials discussed future co-operation with the Egyptian National Railways and the National Authority for Tunnels on a number of projects such as the project of duplication, electrification and signal development on the Qalyoub-Menouf-Tanta and Qalyub-Shebin-el-Qanater-Zagazig routes, for which soft funding has been provided by the Spanish government.

For his part, the Spanish ambassador hailed the achievements in the transport sector in Egypt under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
