CAIRO – The Arab League (AL) called on the international community to take swift action and offer all forms of humanitarian support to mitigate the repercussion of the powerful earthquake and storm Daniel that hit Morocco and Libya, leaving thousands dead and injured.

This came during a joint press conference for Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Social Affairs Haifa Abu Ghazaleh and Saleh Al Tuwaijri, the Secretary General of the Arab Organization for the Red Crescent and the Red Cross (ARCO) on the situation in the Arab regions in the wake of the devastating natural disasters that hit both Libya and Morocco.

The event falls within the framework of cooperation between the AL and ARCO, in line with an MoU signed in 2020.

Abu Ghazaleh offered condolences to Morocco and Libya over the victims of the deadly earthquake and powerful storm Daniel, hailing the major role of local rescue teams and relief workers to dig out survivors.

Urgent aid will be sent to Libya, upon directives of Arab Health Ministers’ Council, the AL assistant chief added.

She thanked Arab countries, institutions and international donors, including multiple UN agencies, for showing solidarity and contributing to the ongoing rescue and relief operations.

ARCO head, meanwhile, said that an emergency call has been made to secure nine million dollars immediately to the Libyan Red Crescent in order to meet urgent needs in the aftermath of the devastating quake.
