Child labour topped the proceedings of a symposium called by the Ministry of Social Solidarity last week in Fayyoum.

The symposium is part of the campaign ‘For your children. Count it right’.

“Child labour is depriving the child of the rights to an education and to live his childhood,” said Magdy Helmy, Ministry of Social Solidarity consultant for Wa’i (awareness) programme.

“The campaign is based on social, economic and health issues, which need to be addressed as part of the national community development plan,” said Mona Amin, a consultant to the Ministry of Solidarity for International Cooperation and to the Wa’i (Awareness) programme.

“Child labour comes at the top of the problems in Fayoum Governorate, which is being targeted by the campaign which covers beneficiaries of the conditional cash support Takaful and Karama,” Amin added.

The Working Child Centre in Fayoum Governorate addresses the issue of child labour by linking the child to education and safeguarding his rights.

Birth control comes under the Waa’i programme, which serves communities with the ‘Two are Enough’ clinics.

During the two-month campaign, the ministry will be relying on community dialogues, cultural seminars — which include artistic performances — organised by 15,000 social pioneers spread throughout Egypt and several NGOs working with the ministry.

Muslim and Christian clerics will also be on hand to answer religious questions by families.
