The Egyptian Health Ministry said Sunday that all precautionary measures are being taken to counter the spread of the new Covid-19 variant.
The number of Covid-19 cases has tangibly declined from the beginning of April, reaching a record low, said spokesman for the Health Ministry Dr Hossam Abdel Ghaffar.
The last reported death from Covid-19 was on March 16, 2023, the spokesman noted.
The variant that is active now is a descendant of Omicron and does not lead to severe illness, he assured.
On May 5, 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced an end to the state of emergency that hit the world as a result of the Covid-19 virus, Abdel Ghaffar reminded, adding that since then all countries are dealing with it as a severe respiratory disease.
New subvariants of Omicron are being discovered but the cases are simple and not at all severe, the spokesman affirmed.
