CAIRO – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will start on Saturday an official visit to Cairo at an invitation of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
The Indian premier’s visit to Egypt comes as relations between Cairo and New Delhi are witnessing an unprecedented boom on all fronts since President Sisi assumed office.
Modi’s two-day visit is the first ever since assuming post in 2014.
During the visit, Modi will hold a series of meetings with a number of senior Egyptian officials and meet with members of the Indian community in Cairo.
Economically speaking, cooperation between Egypt and India saw an unprecedented boom in the recent period.
Indian Ambassador to Egypt Ajit Gupte said the volume of bilateral trade expanded by 75 percent in 2021/22 to reach its highest-ever level of $7.26 billion, adding that trade between the two countries continues to grow in 2022/23.
Around 50 Indian companies operating in Egypt provide direct employment to approximately 38,000 Egyptians, investing over $3.2 billion across the chemical, energy, automobile, retail, apparel and agriculture sectors, among others, he said.
Many of these companies are planning to expand their investments by a cumulative $800 million, Gupte added.
