Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine el-Qabbag on Tuesday followed up the opening of phase two of the development scheme in el-Deir, 9 kilometres northeast of Esna, Luxor Governorate.
The home development scheme falls within the presidential rural development initiative Decent Life, launched in 2019.
The aim is to rebuild the infrastructure of the village, upgrade public utilities and refurbish 160 housing units to serve 33,000 people.
Medical facilities are being developed as part of the initiative, along with an upgrade of the drinking water network, the establishment of new sewage networks and a water lifting station to serve 15,000 residents.
Undersecretary to the Ministry of Social Solidarity in Luxor Mohamed Hussein El-Gabaly said the project also comes under the terms of a co-operation protocol between the Ministry of Social Solidarity and the EFG Hermes charity foundation.
Esna lies 55 kilometres south of Luxor on the west bank of the Nile. Known as Senat in ancient Egypt, Esna is home to ancient Egyptian, Graeco-Roman, Coptic, Islamic archaeological heritage.
