Abul Gheit’s remarks were made during his participation in an African-Union sponsored ministerial meeting on the situation in Sudan. The foreign ministers of Sudan’s neighbors, Kenya, permanent members of the UN Security Council, African Union member states, Norway, a number of Arab countries, the UN secretary general, the Arab League secretary general and the EU foreign affairs and security policy higher representative along with IGAD secretary general are attending the meeting.
In his word, Abul Gheit urged all the Sudanese parties to announce a ceasefire during Eid al-Fitr days which starts on Friday in order to give civilians a chance to take a breath and get their humanitarian needs along with dealing with the urgent and humanitarian cases.
Arab League Spokesman Gamal Roshdi said Abul Gheit noted that the Arab League would send a high-level delegation to Sudan to try to reach consensus and contribute to ceasefire efforts and restoring the peaceful track.
In the meantime, Abul Gheit supported the regional and international efforts aimed at reaching this objective.
The Arab League Council held a meeting on April 16 at the level of permanent delegates and called on the Sudanese parties to immediately reach a ceasefire, preserve the peace and security of civilians along with maintaining the unity and integrity of the Sudanese territories and restore the peaceful track to resolve the Sudanese crisis.
