Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has officially opened the 12th All-Africa University Games (Cairo 2026), welcoming Africa’s university students and athletes to Egypt and reaffirming the country’s commitment to strengthening continental ties through youth, education and sport.

Addressing the opening ceremony, the prime minister said Cairo was opening its doors and hearts to the youth of Africa, stressing that Africa represents to Egypt far more than a geographical affiliation.

It embodies a shared history, deep human bonds, a common destiny and a future that must be built together.

He welcomed ministers, representatives of international and African university sports federations, university presidents, delegation heads, participating universities, athletes and students, expressing his hope that the games would go beyond sporting competition by fostering friendships, cultural exchange and the sharing of knowledge, expertise and experiences.

Madbouly further highlighted the power of sport to unite people, noting that it promotes respect, discipline, courage, teamwork and fair play. He said Cairo 2026 should embody both competitive excellence and friendship, unity and mutual understanding.

The prime minister also underlined the pivotal role of universities in generating knowledge, nurturing creativity and leadership, and building bridges between cultures.

He described the African University Games as more than a sporting event, calling them a celebration of Africa’s youth, universities and shared values.

Madbouly expressed Egypt’s pride in hosting the gathering and thanked the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Federation of African University Sports (FASU), Egyptian University Sports Federation, organising committee, participating universities and national partners.

He gave special recognition to the volunteers and organisers whose enthusiasm and hospitality, he said, would shape visitors’ memories of Egypt.

Encouraging participants to explore Egypt’s history, culture and people, he stressed that relationships forged among young Africans contribute to stronger universities, more connected communities and a more resilient continent.

He concluded by urging athletes to compete with passion and honour, while enjoying the experience and remembering the wider significance of their participation.

He then declared the Games open, followed by a torch-lighting ceremony featuring several Olympic champions and an artistic performance entitled “Modern Egypt”.

“Long live the youth of Africa! Long live the friendship among the peoples of our continent! Long live a united, prosperous Africa capable of shaping its own future,” the premier concluded.
