A new year, a new climate navigating hope and uncertainty in 2024

As we usher in 2024, the air crackles with a mix of hope and uncertainty. Nostradamus’ ominous predictions of famine and floods hang in the shadows, while the Met Office warns of a potential 1.5-degree Celsius temperature breach, a climate red line. Yet, amidst the pessimism, glimmers of action and optimism emerge.

The year 2023 was a stark reminder of the climate emergency. Record-breaking temperatures, devastating wildfires, and torrential floods were manifestations of the wrath of a warming planet. This harsh reality is reflected in the Ipsos Global predictions for 2024, where most expect weather extremes and rising temperatures.

The year 2023 was declared the warmest on record, and forecasts indicate that 2024 could be even hotter. The global average temperature is projected to be between 1.34C and 1.58C above the pre-industrial period, surpassing the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold. This milestone should sound the alarm and serve as a wake-up call for immediate action.   It is disheartening also to note that greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase, with a more than 1 per cent rise in emissions from burning fossil fuels compared to the previous year.

But amidst the gloom, a seed of hope takes root. Public concern about climate change is at an all-time high, with expectations of stricter government targets for carbon emissions and increased urgency for action. This surge in awareness could be the catalyst for a turning point.

The year 2024 promises to be a pivotal year for climate action. The UN Climate Change Conference (COP 29) in November serves as a crucial platform for nations to renew commitments and chart a path towards a sustainable future. Additionally, significant events like the International Day of Biodiversity and the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week offer opportunities to foster collaboration, innovation, and science-based solutions.

However, the road ahead won’t be smooth. El Niño’s influence, coupled with the existing momentum of climate change, threatens to unleash further turbulence in the form of floods and droughts. It’s a stark reminder that we cannot afford to be complacent.

The alarming seriousness of the climate emergency should drive action at individual level. The beginning of the new year is a perfect opportunity to reflect on our lifestyle choices and make environmentally-friendly resolutions. We can make a significant impact by adopting sustainable practices such as reducing our carbon footprint, conserving energy, and supporting initiatives that promote renewable energy sources.

So, as we make resolutions for the new year, let us resolve not just to improve ourselves, but to improve our planet. Let us demand stronger climate action from our governments, support environmentally conscious businesses, and adopt sustainable practices in our daily lives. Every small step, every collective effort, can contribute to a brighter, greener future.

Remember, the future is not preordained. Nostradamus’ prophecies are just that – prophecies. We have the power to rewrite our story, to choose a path of sustainability and resilience. Let us make 2024 the year we turn the tide.
