Egypt’s Ambassador to the United States, Moataz Zahran, on Thursday represented President Abdel Fattah El Sisi at the memorial service and official funeral for former US President Jimmy Carter held at the Washington National Cathedral. President Sisi received an official invitation from Carter’s family to attend the funeral but designated Ambassador Zahran to represent him.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures including US President Joe Biden, President-elect Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and numerous senior officials and ambassadors accredited to the United States.
Ambassador Zahran remarked that Egypt’s participation in the funeral ceremonies reflects its respect for Carter, who played a crucial role in fostering peace and promoting human values.
He noted that both Carter and Egypt’s late president Anwar El-Sadat—who is celebrated as a hero of war and peace—symbolize dedicated efforts towards achieving justice-based peace.
