NEW YORK – UK envoy to the UN Barbra Woodward has urged the UN Security Council not to take any measures that undermine the negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Addressing the UNSC session on Thursday to address GERD issue at a request from Egypt and Sudan, the UK envoy said her country acknowledges the basic interests of the three countries of the River Nile.
She underlined the importance of reaching an agreement among the three parties in order not to harm their common interests in water resources.
Woodward also praised the Declaration of Principles reached in 2015 and the principle of reasonable and equitable use of the Nile water.
She also underlined the disappointment of Egypt and Sudan over not reaching a binding deal on the thorny issues during negotiations held under the sponsorship of the African Union.
The UK diplomat also asserted that the three countries, with the help of the international community and the African Union, could thrash out a deal that can serve the interests of all parties and be acceptable for all of them.
