Biden pledges support to Egypt, Africa to mitigate effects of climate change
‘Egypt reliable regional partner of US’
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi highlighted on Friday the strength of ties with the United States.
During a meeting with US President Joe Biden in Sharm el-Sheikh, President Sisi said Egyptian-US relations have been growing from strength to strength over the past 40 years.
The president also underscored the importance of what he described as Egypt’s ‘strategic’ relations with the US.
President Sisi’s meeting with President Biden came only minutes after the plane of the US president touched down at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport.
The US president is here to participate in the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference, widely referred to as COP27.
President Biden addressed the conference about his country’s climate commitments, including financial ones.
He also talked about the measures his country took in the past period to contribute to the mitigation of global warming.
He said his country would offer support to Egypt and other African countries to make the required green transition and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Egypt hopes the current edition of the conference, which is bringing together dozens of statesmen, government heads, business leaders and climate specialists and advocates, will turn into implementation stage.
The hope in the Arab country is that advanced nations will make good on the climate finance pledges they made during previous COPs.
During his meeting with President Biden, President Sisi said things were moving well in Egypt.
”I take the chance of the presence of some representatives of US media to mention the issue of human rights,” the president said.
He said Egypt had launched its own national human rights strategy, conducted a national dialogue and formed a presidential committee to give amnesty to prisoners who were not involved in violence.
He expressed hopes that the American media would understand the comprehensive approach Egypt takes on this issue of human rights.
The president noted that relations between Cairo and Washington are based on mutual understanding on all issues.
He added that his meeting with President Biden is a good chance to discuss means of boosting strategic relations with the US.
The president referred to his meeting Thursday with US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
We talked, he said, a lot about various issues.
President Biden, for his part, referred to Egypt as ‘Mother of the World’.
This is the most suitable venue, he said, for COP27.
He said his country considers Egypt a strong regional ally, appreciating ties with Cairo.
President Biden also expressed hopes that his visit to Egypt would contribute to strengthening relations with the Arab country even more.
He thanked Egyptian authorities for mediation and efforts to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
President Biden added that Egypt also spoke strongly about the war in Ukraine and was the main mediator in Gaza.
