BERLIN – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi affirmed Cairo will exert its utmost efforts to achieve 1.5°C goal and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to face climate change repercussions in coincidence with celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of landmark green summit.
Answering questions by several participants in the high-level session of the 13th Petersburg Climate Dialogue (PCD13) in Berlin Monday, president Sisi asserted this current important phase requires exerting joint efforts to overcome challenges and build on and develop pledges and outcome of COP26, held in Glasgow.
The Egyptian leader said Egypt’s hosting of the 27th session of the Conference of Parties (COP27) to the UN Framework Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC), to convene late this year reflects Egypt’s greater interest in climate change issue and all its bad impacts.
President Sisi said it is necessary to address climate change issue through determination and joint efforts.
He thanked Germany for hosting PCD13 and said the event stressed the country’s commitment to supporting COP27.
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi underscored the necessity of exerting more efforts to help save the Earth for the coming generations.
Egypt will spare no effort to achieve this target through negotiations and cooperation with partners, he said.
“We are in dire need of achieving just transition to green and renewable energy,” added president Sisi.
The Egyptian leader called for taking all necessary measures to face the bad impacts of climate changes in light of circumstances and conditions in each country worldwide.
Main economies play an important role and efforts must be exerted taking into consideration different conferences, he said, adding it is important to take into account losses sustained by developing countries, especially small countries in the African continent because of climate changes, in addition to the provision of financial and technological support for backing endeavors aimed at overcoming climate change repercussions.
He voiced hope that COP27, slated in November in Sharm el-Sheikh, will be successful and come up with an ambitious agenda, stressing the importance of helping developing countries and providing necessary financing for them with the help of the private sector as far as climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts are concerned.
The Sharm el-Sheikh conference offers an important opportunity for probing all climate change issues and reaching suitable solutions, according to him.
The civil society plays as well a vital role in COP27, he said, adding youth organization will be allowed to participate in the conference.
