CAIRO – Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Sunday presided over a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, said Presidency Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi.
The meeting was devoted to reviewing the consequences of the attack that targeted a number of the Armed Forces personnel who were martyred during the discharge of their national duties. Also reviewed during the meeting were the measures taken to track and eliminate the fleeing takfiri elements, Spokesman Radi said.
During the meeting, President Sisi gave directives for law enforcement elements to complete clearing areas of northern Sinai from terrorist and takfiri elements. The directives also called for continuing security measures that contribute to eradicating all forms of terrorism, the spokesman said.
The president paid tribute to the Armed Forces for its efforts to dry off the sources of terrorism and uproot it from the peninsula in co-operation with the honourable citizens as well as for its efforts to carry out giant national projects in the Sinai in cooperation with various state institutions.
President Sisi also noted the Egyptian people’s high estimation of the sacrifices offered by Armed Forces and Police personnel for the sake of protecting the homeland and its sanctities.
Also considered during the meeting were some files and topics pertaining to the activities and tasks of the Armed
Forces and its efforts to safeguard Egypt’s national security in all the state’s strategic directions, Spokesman Radi said.
The meeting followed foiling a terrorist attack by takfiri elements on a checkpoint at a water lifting station in west Sinai, resulting in the martyrdom of an officer and 10 soldiers, according to the Armed Forces spokesman. Five others were injured.
President Sisi mourned the martyrs and emphasised that treacherous attacks would not undermine the determination of the state, people and Armed Forces to continue their war to uproot terrorism.
Tweeting his response to the attack, President Sisi said on Saturday evening that Egypt’s loyal sons are still fulfilling their duty with full courage and sacrifice and with unique self-denial and unshakable faith in the homeland safeguarding doctrine.
President Sisi offered condolences to the families of the victims and to the Egyptian people over the martyrs, wishing those injured in the attack a speedy recover
