CAIRO – A regional workshop kicked off at the Arab League headquarters on Sunday to combat desertification and support food security.
The workshop is organised by the Global Initiative on Reducing Land Degradation and Enhancing Conservation of Terrestrial Habitats, (henceforth referred to as Global Land Initiative or GLI), which aims to prevent, halt, and reverse land degradation.
The initiative was launched by the G20 Leaders during Saudi Arabia’s presidency of the G20 in November 2020.
Themed “Biosaline agriculture as an approach for mitigating degraded lands in the Arab world”, the workshop runs for five days in cooperation with the Arab League, the International Center for Biosaline agriculture, Arab Organization for Agricultural Development and the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD).
It comes in implementation of the resolution of the 34th session of the Arab Environment Ministers to end land degradation.
It aims at enhancing technical potentials of participants by providing a comprehensive overview of the management of biosaline agriculture as an effective tool for combating desertification and rehabilitating degraded lands in light of current challenges promoted by water scarcity and climate change.
