CAIRO – Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi stressed Egypt’s appreciation of the growing and fruitful cooperation with the United Nations with regard to the climate change issue as Egypt gears up for hosting the Climate Change Conference (COP27).
Sisi said Egypt seeks to build on what was achieved in the Glasgow summit in order to reach climate change solutions and commitments that can be applied at the international level.
Sisi made the remarks on Saturday during a meeting with Executive-Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Patricia Espinosa, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Radi said, noting that the meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad.
For his part, Espinosa said it is an honor to meet President Sisi, voicing hope that the COP27 – which will be held in Sharm el Sheikh – would be a watershed summit in the climate change action.
Espinosa hailed Egypt’s historic stands, noting that Egypt was at the forefront of developing state that adopted crucial policies vis-a-vis climate change.
Espinosa also referred to the ongoing national efforts in the environment domain, especially with regard to green transition and confronting climate change.
Espinosa highlighted Egypt’s efforts to set up green cities, turn to clean transports, issue green bonds and endorse the 2050 national strategy for climate change.
