CAIRO- Participants in the national dialogue meetings held on Thursday a session on family-related issues, most prominently guardianship on minors’ finances in case of divorce or the death of a parent.
Representative of Coordination’s Committee of Parties’ Youth Leaders and Politicians (CPYP) Manal el-Alfi said they recommended amending the law regulating guardianship on minors’ finances in a way that will allow the guardian to invest the money provided that he/she prepares a feasibility study to the court and the court has the right to approve it or turn it down.
The party also recommended setting up a fund under the State sponsorship to invest minors’ finances.
Tarek Darwish, representative of parties’ alliance, said they recommended transferring the guardianship to the mother immediately after the death of the father.
Under the law, when a father dies, legal guardianship over any of his children under the age of 21 and their inheritance goes to their paternal grandfather or to a guardian nominated by the father – leaving the mother with no say.
