Two murals on the theme of migration were unveiled at the Maqad of Sultan Qaitbey (MASQ) complex in Cairo.
The artworks, by immigrants residing in Egypt, form part of the Migrant Humanity project by Mexican artist Enrique Chiu.
Mexico’s Ambassador in Cairo Jose Octavio Tripp unveiled the murals, which took three days to complete.
Mexico is committed to preserving the dignity of migrants, Tripp said, pointing out the similarities between his country and Egypt regarding migrants.
Migrants either pass through Mexico and Egypt on their way to a final destination, he said, adding that sometimes, migrants eventually settle in Mexico and Egypt.
The Migrant Humanity project was in tandem with the International Organisation for Migration to demonstrate the importance of migration in a contemporary world context.
With the photographs and paintings was the screening of the documentary A World Without Borders.
Chiu’s work is shaped by his experiences, perceptions and emotions. ‘Migrant Humanity’ is an invitation to experience art and abandon the urge to interpret images.
Laurent de Boeck, chief of Mission of the International Organisation for Migration to Egypt at IOM, Ambassador Mohamed Khairat, Assistant Minister of Migration for International Cooperation, and Agnieszka Dobrowolska head of Archinos Architecture were present at the unveiling.
