Luxor governorate will mark on Thursday the phenomenon of the solar alignment at the main holy shrine of the Karnak temple.
A large number of tourists of different nationalities are set to witness the phenomenon that occurs annually on December 21 and marks the beginning of the winter season – winter solstice – in ancient Egypt.
The Upper Egypt governorate of Luxor will organised a big celebration to mark the phenomenon.
Director of Karnak Temple El Tayyeb El Ghareb, in statements on Tuesday, said the solar alignment phenomenon plays a crucial role in boosting the tourism flow, in coincidence with that beginning of the new winter tourism season.
The sun shines on the main axis of the Karnak Temple in the solar alignment phenomenon, passing through the eastern gate and ending at the temple’s main pylon.
During the event, the sun appears in the middle of the temple’s eastern gate and then illuminates the sacred parts of the site, including the open courtyard, the hall of columns, and the sanctuary of the god Amun.
