The Centre for Migration and Refugee Studies (CMRC) at the American University in Cairo (AUC) has launched the Egyptian Migration Hub (EHUB) in co-operation with the European Union Delegation.

The hub aims to bring together all relevant stakeholders, including academics, government officials, UN agencies, NGOs, academics and policymakers to share their experiences and form a common baseline of understanding of the context and available policy options in regard to migration.

The activities of the EHUB will vary from holding meetings to online workshops, in-person training, media training, podcasts on migration and policy briefs.

Ambassador Christian Berger, head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt, said in his speech the EU is committed to working with Egypt as a key partner in dealing with migration, security and humanitarian challenges, affecting both Europe and Northern Africa.

“We are looking forward to strong co-operation with the MFA, AUC and other Egyptian institutions and universities,” he added.

Chief of mission Laurent De Boeck for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Egypt, told The Egyptian Gazette that the hub is to play an essential role in terms of the assessment of migrants’ situations besides issuing recommendations for policy makers.

“I hope the research they do will link the reality of migrants and refugees to legislative frameworks to adopt adequate programmes. This is a very important aspect,” he said.
