The Egyptian House of Representatives Wednesday approved in principle two bills submitted by the government to amend some provisions of the law on Egyptian citizenship of 1975.
The House had, in October 2022, referred the two bills to a joint defense and legislative committee for study.
The amendments are meant to achieve gender equality in terms of granting Egyptian citizenship to children. Minor children of a foreign woman who had acquired Egyptian citizenship should be treated likewise.
The amended law aims to also boost opportunities to attain foreign currency through facilitating procedures of the acquisition of Egyptian citizenship, which should be also granted to foreigners who buy real estate from the private sector.
