Egyptian Minister of State for Environmental Affairs Yasmine Fouad reviewed her ministry’s efforts regarding the development of the environmental sector in the context of climate change.
The review came during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday chaired by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli.
A number of government ministers attended the meeting.
Fouad stressed that in a world full of quick changes, the integration of the environmental dimension into state policies has become a tangible issue that cannot be dispensed with or ignored.
She said the government has achieved clear successes with regard to comprehensive economic reform based on environmental dimensions, which aims to achieve sustainable development and transforming to green economy.
Fouad said that over the past three years, the ministry of environment has adopted a plan to build a supportive climate and transform the environmental system into an economic one that relies on partnership with the private sector.
It also targets reducing pollution, preserving natural resources, confronting global challenges, and increasing supportive programmes to raise environmental awareness.
On the implementation mechanisms of climate change that support the environmental sector, the minister said work is underway to integrate the environmental dimension in all sectors of the state through cooperation with ministries, and the establishment of many partnerships with the private sector, the banking sector, and civil society institutions.
With regard to the partnership with the private sector in the field of waste-to-energy conversion, the minister of environment told the meeting that the total volume of investments in the project stood at around $340-400 million in the first phase only.
Fouad said that the fiscal year 2021-2022 investment plan attaches great importance to the environment and sustainable development. The plan also addresses the issue of the transition to a green economy with a focus on environmental improvement initiatives, the minister added.
