CAIRO – Egypt’s Ambassador in Brussels Badr Abdel Aati held meetings with a number of European Parliament (EP) members, as part of continued efforts
to strengthen co-operation ties between the Egyptian parliament and the European legislative body.
In a press release posted on its Facebook page on Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said Abdel Aati met with Austrian MEP Lukas Mandl of the European People’s Party and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Security and Defense, and Czech MEP Mikuláš PEKSA of the Group of the Greens and member of the Committee on Industry, Scientific Research and Energy of, as well as Spanish MEP Jorge BUXADÉ VILLALBA of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group and member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.
The Egyptian diplomat posted the EP members on the National Strategy for Human Rights launched by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on September 2021, addressing political, economic, social, civilian and cultural rights, rights of marginalized groups (women, children, disabled people, youth and the elderly), and education and capacity building in the human rights field.
Abdel Aati reviewed the State’s efforts to enable women and young people and enhance the citizenship rights, in addition to supporting religious freedoms.
He also briefed the MEPs on the mega projects carried out in Egypt covering the fields of infrastructure, digital transformation, green transition and smart mobility.
The meetings took up Egypt’s preparations for hosting the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC)
COP27 to be held in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm-el
Sheikh in November, especially in light if the country’s focus on addressing climate change and preserving environment.
Abdel Aati highlighted the pivotal role played by Egypt to achieve security and stability in the Middle East and Africa, including efforts meant to support the Palestinian cause
and end the Libyan crisis.
On their part, the European Parliament members lauded Egypt’s pioneering part in countering terrorism and illegal migration.
The two sides also discussed the repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.
