The head of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), Dr Tamer Essam, on Wednesday met with chairman of Swiss Roche Pharma International Jörg-Michael Rupp for talks on co-operation in localising the pharmaceutical industry.
The two officials also discussed the development of legislation in clinical trials in Egypt.
Meanwhile, the government is working round the clock to expand the localisation of the pharmaceutical industry as one of the most vital sectors for the economy, Essam said.
The state provides all pharmaceutical firms the necessary support to reach this national goal, he said, adding that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has tasked the government with developing an executive plan to expand the localisation of the drugs industry as soon as possible.
Egypt is moving steadily to localising production of medicines as well as building partnerships to manufacture raw materials, which is considered one of the priorities for national security,” he said.
For his part, Jörg-Michael Rupp voiced his appreciation for the supervisory role and technical support by the EDA for the company’s projects to localise its cosmetics industry in Egypt.
The Swiss Roche Pharma International chairman said Egypt is ramping up efforts to enhance the domestic pharmaceutical landscape and reduce reliance on imports.
Alongside developing the country’s manufacturing capabilities, Egypt is also looking to multinational pharmaceutical firms in a bid to improve international co-operation and localise the production of drugs and vaccines.
