CAIRO – Egypt is keen on promoting economic co-operation with Uruguay within the framework of the Mercosur agreement, affirmed Trade and Industry Minister Nevin Gamea.
Uruguay is considered one of the pivotal countries in Latin America, she added during her meeting with Uruguayan Ambassador to Egypt Adriana Lissidini in the presence of Commercial Representation Service Minister Plenipotentiary of Trade Yahya al Wathiq Billah.
The Egyptian government welcomes opening new Uruguayan markets before Egyptian goods, she added.
Efforts are underway to implement a plan to open new markets and increase the export of Egypt’s products, the minister said in a statement Monday.
The meeting took up ways of establishing an Egyptian-Uruguayan business council which includes businessmen from both countries in order to enhance cooperation in trade and investment spheres, added the minister.
The volume of trade exchange between Egypt and Uruguay reached about dlrs 493.3 million last year, compared to about dlrs 207.3 million in 2020, noted the minister.
The Uruguayan ambassador, for her part, affirmed her country’s keenness on promoting ties with Egypt in the various spheres.
Egypt is a pivotal country in the Middle East and Africa, she added, noting that Egypt and Uruguay enjoy diplomatic ties that span over 90 years.
