Egypt’s Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad, Trade and Industry Minister Nevine Gameaa and Civil Aviation Minister Mohammad Manar Enabah on Thursday witnessed the signing of co-operation protocols to establish solar power plants at Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport, as well as on the rooftops of nine hotels in the Red Sea resort city.

Those protocols come as part of the country’s green economy strategy, which is based on promoting sustainable tourism, strengthening biodiversity, cutting waste and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to a statement released by the Environment Ministry.

The agreements come as the State launched the Green Sharm El-Sheikh (GEF) project, which aims to turn Sharm El-Sheikh into a model integrated and ecologically sustainable tourism city of national and international importance through the adoption of further low-carbon technologies, proactive waste prevention and management practices.

They also coincide with starting the National Project for Solar Cell Systems, which is implemented by the Industrial Modernisation Centre (IMC) in co-operation with The United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

This project, which has been awarded the prize of the British Energy Institute as the best project presented globally to reduce greenhouse gases for 2020, aims to support the spread of small solar stations.
