Egypt Post, the government agency responsible for postal services, has issued a stamp to commemorate the nomination of Cairo as the Capital of Islamic Culture for the year 2022.
The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) has chosen Cairo as the Capital of Islamic Culture for this year due to the city’s diversity and cultural richness, which has made it a meeting-point of civilisations and an open museum of world heritage, Egypt Post chairman Sherif Farouk said on Monday.
The nomination is deemed as one of the state’s major achievements, testifying to Egypt’s success in preserving and promoting Egyptian heritage, Farouk said.
The 6 x 5 centimetre stamp supports QR technology.
Meanwhile, Minister of Culture Enas Abdel-Dayem, the director-general of ISESCO, Salim Mohammed Al-Malik, and Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel-Aal launched yesterday the celebrations for the nomination at the Roman Theatre in northern Cairo in the presence of a group of ambassadors and representatives of the countries participating in the events and members of the House of Deputies.
Abdel-Dayem said Cairo is a creative hub for thought and art.
The minister said that the capital city of Egypt is steeped in cultural arts.
She praised ISESCO’s efforts to celebrate the capitals of Islamic countries and promote relationships between them.
Abdel-Dayem said: “We celebrate Cairo, the capital of culture for the countries of the Islamic world as a sign of human coexistence until today, thus, it deserves to be a beacon of culture and enlightenment through the ages.”
In his speech, the director-general of ISESCO praised the history of the city of Cairo, over which successive civilisations have preserved its importance and heritage, in reference to Al-Azhar Mosque, the Opera House, the House of Books and the names of the most prominent writers and great thinkers, who lived in Egypt.
