CAIRO – The Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation dismissed news circulating on social media outlets purporting that watermelon, peach and tomato cause poisoning or intestinal colic cases.
In a statement issued, the ministry said news claiming the spread of toxic or polluted watermelon and peach that are dangerous to citizens’ health in markets are “baseless”.
The ministry said all products and agriculture goods available at markets are of good quality, safe and free from any chemicals or pesticides, the statement read.
All available commodities are subject to
regular and thorough scrutiny by the National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) and meet highest standards of food safety and hygiene, according to the statement.
The ministry called on all media outlets and social media users to verify the authenticity of news before publishing or sharing it, so as not to stir public confusion, the statement said.
