CAIRO – Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit denounced on Wednesday the US veto that blocked a UN draft resolution, calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Algeria, on behalf of the Arab group, submitted the draft resolution to the UNSC.
In a statement on Wednesday, Spokesman for the AL Secretary General Gamal Roushdi expressed Abul Gheit’s deep regret at the US veto of Gaza ceasefire resolution for the third time since the outbreak of the crisis, a matter that clearly indicates its political and moral responsibility for the continuation of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
The US stances undermine the credibility of the international system and paralyse the United Nations, a matter that provides a political cover for Israel to continue its aggression in light of the failure of the international community to stop the heinous crimes committed against the Palestinian civilians on a daily basis, he said.
The draft resolution reflects a balanced position that gives priority to the humanitarian dimensions and saving hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, who are vulnerable to the Israeli killing machine, starvation and disease if the war continues, he made it clear.
The UN Security Council met again in emergency session in New York on Gaza Tuesday, where the United States vetoed a resolution put forward on behalf of Arab States by Algeria demanding “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that must be respected by all parties”.
