Around 1.8 million women have been examined under President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s ‘Mother and Foetus Healthcare’ initiative, which was launched in March 2020, Ministry of Health statement announced on Sunday.
The initiative, which comes under the slogan ‘100 million Healthy Lives’, covers early detection of diseases transmitted mother to foetus, and the provision of free treatment and health care, Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said.
The initiative also entails early detection of virus B, HIV and syphilis in expectant mothers and follow-up care of mother and new born 42 days after delivery, the spokesman added.
Under the Initiative, these services are available in all health units and medical centres, Abdel Ghaffar said.
Cases requiring further examinations are referred to 90 centres for Hepatitis B and HIV, plus 163 referral centres for syphilis nationwide, Abdel Ghaffar added.
Cases of high blood sugars or any other risk factors are referred to 303 health ministry hospitals to complete their treatment, he said.
Dr Fawzi Fathi, executive manager for the initiative confidentiality of results is guaranteed and testing is carried out in accordance with international quality standards.
Consultation for disease prevention is provided and such services are given only with woman’s consent, Dr Fathi said.
A database for the survey has been created and linked to health facilities participating in the initiative to facilitate follow-up and case transfer, he added.
