Polish Ambassador Michael Labenda said 2022 was a year of utmost importance for political relations between Poland and Egypt. In May, Polish President Andrzej Duda paid a state visit to Egypt.
“It was the first visit on the level of head of state between our countries since 2008. Talks with President Sisi were fruitful, number of agreements were signed,” the ambassador said.
During his stay in Cairo, the President met the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed el-Tayeb and Pope Tawadros II. In November, President Duda took part in COP27.
The ambassador expressed his appreciation of Egyptian contributions to reach a satisfactory agreement.
In the press conference, the ambassador referred to the ongoing war in Ukraine. “This is the topic of our discussions with Egyptian partners, starting with the visit of the Arab League contact group that included Egyptian foreign minister in Warsaw in April.”
Egypt belongs to the group of the main trading partners in the North Africa, the envoy added. Trade exchange between the two countries last year was worth $725 million. The initial data for the first nine months of the year suggests that the trade exchange is growing.
According to current data between January and September 2022, bilateral trade exchange was at $586 million.
Polish exports to Egypt include mechanical and electrical equipment, vehicles and automotive parts, products of plant origin, chemicals, base metal products and paper.
As for tourism, June witnessed the resumption of flights operated by Polish Airlines LOT five days a week between the capitals of both countries.
“We strongly believe that the flight connection will enable to intensify the bilateral tourist traffic and business co-operation,” he said.
In 2022, according to estimates by tour operators, 500,000 Polish tourists came to Egypt, which ranks with Greece and Türkiye as the most popular tourist destinations from Poland.
