On the sidelines of COP27, hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Shaker, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, witnessed the signing of a cooperation protocol between Orange Egypt and the New and Renewable Energy Authority of the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy. The contract requires Orange to purchase renewable energy and use it to power its networks and sites throughout the country, as Orange has pledged to implement an integrated approach to achieve zero carbon in its networks, operations, buildings, and branches by 2040.

For nearly 7 years, Orange Egypt has been implementing an integrated green transformation and carbon reduction strategy. The current cooperation protocol with the Ministry of Electricity aims to accelerate such transformation and diversify renewable energy sources. Unsurprisingly, solar cells are already used by Orange to power a variety of network stations, towers, exchanges, and branches.

According to the protocol of cooperation with the NREA, Orange Egypt shall receive clean electricity generated by the Authority from wind and solar energy, allowing it to avoid the use of fossil fuels and electricity generated from unsustainable sources, thereby achieving Orange’s ultimate goal of reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.

Orange Egypt’s CEO and Managing Director, Eng. Yasser Shaker, expressed his happiness with the prospect collaboration with the Ministry of Electricity and the New and Renewable Energy Authority, emphasizing that Orange is taking a new step toward sustainability by providing high-end telecommunications and technology services that meet all eco-friendly standards.

“Orange Egypt is working hard on multiple fronts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. This cooperation protocol is a critical step in our multi-year journey. We’ve already achieved spectacular successes, such as cutting carbon emissions in some major operations by half in the last two years “He added.
