SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt – President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said on Monday Egypt is ready for cooperating with the Italian bodies concerned with combating illegal migration out of its commitment to eliminate this phenomenon.

Sisi’s remarks came during his meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who came to Sharm El-Sheikh to attend the UN climate conference, COP27, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.

President Sisi welcomed Meloni’s visit to Egypt and participation in COP27, voicing hope that her visit would give a stronger impetus to bilateral ties in the political, economic, cultural, and security fields, the spokesman added.

The Italian premier asserted keenness on bolstering bilateral cooperation to achieve the benefit of the two countries’ peoples and described Egypt as a strong pillar of security and stability in the Middle East and the Mediterranean Basin, according to Rady.

The meeting tackled ways of developing investment, trade and economic relations as well as boosting industrial cooperation.

The two leaders touched on the energy file and the possibility of electricity interconnection between the two countries to make use of Egypt’s various capabilities in helping European countries to deal with their energy crisis.

The meeting took up the Mediterranean security, especially the Libyan file, with both sides asserting the importance of maintaining Libya’s sovereignty and supporting its efforts to hold presidential and parliamentary elections.

They also discussed the case of Italian student Giulio Regeni.
