Egypt’s modern pentathlon players Ahmed el-Gendy and Ahmed Ashraf qualified for the rescheduled Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, now taking place in July.

El-Gendy won the bronze medal in the final of the men’s competitions at the Modern Pentathlon World Championship held in Cairo after collecting 1,417 points to officially qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, while Ashraf came in fourth place with 1,412 points.

The closing ceremony were attended by Klaus Schormann, President of the International Union of Modern Pentathlon, Dr. Hassan Moustafa, President of the International Handball Federation, Representative Mahmoud Hussein, Chairman of the Youth and Sports Committee in Parliament and Sherif el-Erian, President of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation.

Hungarian Adam Marosi won the gold medal after collecting 1435 points, and Alexander Lifanov of the Russian Federation came in second place and the silver medal with 1426 points.

Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy applauded the Egyptian national team for their eye-catching performance at the Modern Pentathlon World Championship held in Cairo.

Dr. Sobhi praised the outstanding level of the Egyptian players participated in the tournament, wishing the qualified players success at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.

The minister underlined that Egypt is ready to host international and continental championships thanks to its good infrastructure and the unlimited support of the political leadership.

Egypt’s el-Gendy, Ashraf, Islam Hamad and Mohanad Tarek qualified for the final of the men’s competitions.

El-Gendy led the semi-final qualifiers with 1103 points; Hamed came in 16th place with 1080 points, Tarek ranked 18th with 1079 points, while Ashraf came in 34th place with 1093 points.

Twelve Egyptians participate in the competition, six of whom are males and the others females.

More than 500 participants from 45 countries – Argentina, Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Britain, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Spain and Turkey – took part in the men and women competitions.

Egypt will also stage the UIPM 2021 Junior World Championships in Alexandria in July, five months later than originally scheduled after a Coronavirus-enforced postponement.
