Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri on Monday stressed Egypt’s appreciation of India’s important role in climate change negotiations, praising India’s recent announcement of strengthening its nationally determined contributions to reduce emissions, which contributes to efforts to achieve the goals of the Paris climate change agreement.

The foreign minister’s remarks came during a phone call with Bhupender Yadav, Indian Government’s Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

During the call, FM Shoukri highlighted Egypt’s interest in coordinating with India on various climate issues, taking into account India’s upcoming presidency of the Group of Twenty next year, Spokesman Abu Zaid said. In this connection, he added, the results of the recent G20 summit held in Indonesia were considered during Shoukri-Yadav conversation.

The Indian minister, for his part, praised the efforts of the Egyptian incoming presidency of the COP27 conference in preparation for convening the summit, Spokesman Abu Zaid said.

Minister Yadav, he added, expressed confidence in Egypt’s capability to enable the summit to come out with the desired results that preserve the interests of developing countries, especially regarding the issues of adaptation with climate change, and to lead international climate action during the coming period.

Minister Shoukri expressed aspiration for India’s participation at the highest possible level in the COP27 conference, which will witness a large and high-level presence from various countries of the world, and India’s active and constructive engagement in the various activities of the conference.
