ALAMEIN – Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Mabdouli termed as an “important step” the inking of a contract for manufacturing and supplying 40 new trains of the second and third lines of the Cairo Metro with the alliance of Hyundai Rotem and the National Egyptian Railway Industries Company (NERIC).

This falls within the framework of the directives of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to localize heavy industries in Egypt in accordance with international standards, through cooperation with major international companies.

He made the remarks on Wednesday while witnessing the inking of the contract.

The event was attended by Ministers Hala Saeed of Planning, Kamel Wazir of Transport, Rania Mashar of International Co-operation and Ahmed Samir of Trade.

Also, the South Korean ambassador attended the inking ceremony.

Board Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels Sherif Hassan Leil signed the contract with Hyundai Rotem President Lee Yong-bae and NERIC Managing Director Ahmed Fekri Abdel Wahab.

The contract will ensure maintenance for 8 years with two-year guarantee.

Transport Minister Kamel Wazir said the Egyptian government – represented in the ministries of transport and planning – adopted an international plan for developing the metro trains and electric locomotives in order to promote the transport network in Egypt.

He said this important for promoting economic growth and expansion of urban areas.
