Cairo- Egyptian Local Development Minister Mahmoud Shaarawi and International Co-operation Minister Rania el-Mashat attended on Monday the signing ceremony of three co-operation protocols to implement investment plan projects to clean up the country’s Kitchener Drain.
The co-operation protocol was signed between the Local Development Ministry and the governorates of Kafr el Sheikh, Gharbia and Dakahlia governorates.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) are investing in the €79 million project.
An additional investment of €8 million by the EBRD and the EU will be in a series of recycling factories and sanitary landfills in the three governorates.
The signing of the agreement is part of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to the government to improve water quality, which will improve health and environment in 182 villages in the three governorates, Shaarawi said.
The Local Development Ministry will upgrade waste collection and transportation in the three governorates with investments of €34.5 million in Kafr el-Sheikh, €18.5 million in Gharbia and €20 million in Dakahlia, Shaarawi added.
The International Co-operation Ministry spares no effort in coordinating with the Local Development Ministry and international development partners to support the projects and initiatives implemented in the governorates, he said.
