In a spiritual, joyful atmosphere, the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo held a cultural event Sunday night to celebrate the holy fasting month of Ramadan in the Cairo Opera House.

The event was the first after Covid, as the last one was held two years ago.

Indonesian Ambassador Lutfi Rauf said that this event is different from previous Indonesian cultural events held in Cairo.

“What made this celebration different was that in the previous performances the troupes performed individually, but this time they performed together. They presented some of the rich Indonesian culture to the Egyptian audience,” Ambassador Rauf told The Egyptian Gazette.

He added that Indonesia consists of 17,000 islands and has a population of 279 million people. “It has more than 3,000 traditional dances which reflect its cultural diversity.”

The performers in Sunday’s event are currently living in Egypt and studying at Al-Azhar and the Indonesian School in Cairo. They hail from Aceh province on the northwest tip of Sumatra Island, Banten, westernmost province on the island of Java and West Java, on the western part of the island of Java.

They performed religious songs in Arabic and Indonesian languages celebrating Ramadan and praising Prophet Mohamed (Peace Be Upon Him).

Members of the Indonesian community and many Egyptians attended the two-hour event and interacted joyfully with the performances and songs.

The event was also organised by the Culture Ministry and the Cairo Opera House.
This year, Egypt and Indonesia celebrate the 75th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations. The event is among many to mark this occasion as well.
