Cairo- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland exchanged views Wednesday on the latest developments of the Palestinian cause.

Shoukry and Wennesland discussed means of pushing ahead with the peace path between Israel and the Palestinians, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Ahmed Hafez said.

During the meeting, FM Shoukry reviewed Egypt’s vision in this regard and efforts to create a favourable climate to resuming talks and launch an overall negotiating process based on the relevant terms of references of the international law and United Nations resolutions, Hafez added.

In addition, the Foreign Minister dwelt on joint endeavours by Egypt, Jordan, Germany and France within the so –called “Munich Format”. He stressed Cairo’s keenness on reaching out to the Israelis and the Palestinians to embark on confidence-building measures in order to relaunch negotiations between both sides.

Meanwhile, Shoukry reiterated Egypt’s concern over the atrocities in Jerusalem, and underlined the necessity of halting violations targeting the Arab, Islamic and Christian identity of the city and its holy sites, as well as altering its existing legal and historical status, Hafez said.

Shoukry and Wennesland agreed on the importance of intensifying contacts over the coming period to avoid further escalation in Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.

For his part, the UN coordinator said he highly appreciated Cairo endeavours to resume peace efforts and achieve reconciliation among Palestinians, the spokesman said.

Wennesland said he was looking forward to continuing coordination and consultation with Cairo.

Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s support to the UN coordinator’s efforts to revive the Middle East peace process, within the framework of a two-state solution, and to consolidate security and stability in the region.
