The  Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities reopened on Sunday part of the Babylon Fortress, following a restoration process.

Located in southern Cairo’s Complex of Religions area, the part of the fortress restored and reopened yesterday would be ready to welcome visitors and tourists, the Ministry said in a statement.

Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Projects and General Supervisor of the Historic Cairo Project, Hesham Samir, said the part of the fortress reopened is located in close proximity to the gate of the Coptic Museum.

The first phase of the restoration of the fortress, he added, included a cleaning of all external and internal fronts and a removal of dirt from them.

“Dust and stains stuck on the walls of the fortress were removed,” Samir said.

He added that the lighting system of the circular structure was also modernized.

This, he said, has contributed to emblazoning the architectural beauty of the fortress.

Samir revealed that the second phase of the restoration of the fortress had already begun.

This phase, he said, would include the restoration of the southern part of the fortress, which is located below the Hanging Church,

He said this part is called ‘Amr Gate’ and that it would be reopened for visitors soon.
